LOS ANGELES — One hundred sheriff’s deputies and 400 part-time deputies were laid off. Narcotics and gang units were disbanded. Helicopters were grounded.

K-9 police dog units remained on the job.

To absorb more than $30 million in losses, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department had to focus almost exclusively on answering emergency calls, but police dogs and their handlers survived the cuts. It’s a scenario that is playing out among the thousands of K-9 teams across the U.S. that have survived deep budget cuts to stay on the job. (more…)

Callie was one of the kittens of a stray my mother-in-law adopted several years ago.

My in-laws are both in the nursing home now, and we have sold their home. We are unable to keep Callie because of the number of pets we already own. Callie is a sweet, even-tempered, tabby cat. She is spayed and is about 8 years old.

We want to find an inside home for her.

She is comfortable around other dogs and/or cats.

She is living in our mudroom. Because our house is so close to the street, we do not let our pets outside. We would love for Callie to find a good adoptive family who would love and protect her.
