Is your pet a firecracker fraidy-cat?

THE ORLANDO SENTINEL

Mouse is going to hate the July 4th weekend.

It’s nothing personal against Independence Day, a national holiday that calls for barbecues, parades and stock-car racing. It’s the dreaded fireworks that will worry Mouse, causing him to drool, pant, not eat and try to hide his massive head. Mouse — a 6-month-old, 75-pound English mastiff who is scared of loud noises such as thunder and airplanes — isn’t alone.

Many of our furry friends despise July Fourth, not understanding that all the screaming, brilliant and booming explosions are all in fun. Some pets run away. Some chew the couch. Some urinate in the bedroom. And others shiver and hide in the closet. (more…)

PHOENIX — “Man’s best friend” doesn’t go far enough for Buddy — a German shepherd who remembered his training and saved his owner’s life by calling 911 when the man had a seizure.

And it’s not the first time Buddy has been there for owner Joe Stalnaker, a police officer said Sunday.
On a recording of the 911 call Wednesday, Buddy is heard whimpering and barking after the dispatcher answers and repeatedly asks if the caller needs help. (more…)

THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE

Katie Popovich recently accompanied her boyfriend to a Chicago animal shelter in search of a dog. When a beagle-border collie mix immediately nuzzled against them, they were smitten.

But the 22-year-olds received a considerably chillier response from the human behind the counter. “It seemed like we were instantly thrown into this category that we were just kids and not responsible,” she said, adding that they are now talking with breeders. (more…)

Wendall is a male, tricolor terrier mix puppy that was found running through traffic on Main Street in downtown North Little Rock.

Had he not been picked up, his outcome would not have been so happy. He is about 3 months old.

He resides with 3 cats and 2 dogs. He tries to be the "big" dog but is really a scaredy cat. He is very well-behaved for a puppy but does love to run around and play with others. He loves to nap in a lap and sleeps in a crate at night.

He is in potty training. He does great in a secure fence with other dogs around. He is very loyal, is learning to walk on a leash and is always a couple steps behind you.

He looks like the dog in the movie "Because of Winn Dixie." The dog is a Picardy Shepard, so Wendall may be a a rare, little street treasure.

He is up-to-date on shots and will be neutered.
