MARENGO, Ill. — Honor and Haven didn’t have the easiest start to life.

The shy, miniature horse siblings now ages 8 and 9 were born into a family of inbreds. But three years ago, they showed up skinny and scared at the farm that would become their home. They, in turn, would inspire its name.

Destination Safe Haven in Marengo first began caring for the brother-sister pair and soon moved on to help dozens of aging hooved animals, some once unwanted and others rescued from lives of mistreatment or neglect. (more…)

A pygmy goat that Little Rock animal-control officers picked up last week remains unclaimed at the city’s animal shelter.

McCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — In Southwest Ranches, Fla., a 100-pound Siberian lynx named Sasha roams Steve and Barbara Burk’s house like the alpha-male predator he is.

At times the powerful cat paws playfully at a llama, a goat or another critter in the menagerie of animals the Burks invite in to wander the house. At other times Sasha grows bored with the barnyard hoi polloi and retires to his bedroom, furnished with a double bed and a television. (more…)

Wendall is a male, tricolor terrier mix puppy that was found running through traffic on Main Street in downtown North Little Rock.

Had he not been picked up, his outcome would not have been so happy. He is about 3 months old.

He resides with 3 cats and 2 dogs. He tries to be the "big" dog but is really a scaredy cat. He is very well-behaved for a puppy but does love to run around and play with others. He loves to nap in a lap and sleeps in a crate at night.

He is in potty training. He does great in a secure fence with other dogs around. He is very loyal, is learning to walk on a leash and is always a couple steps behind you.

He looks like the dog in the movie "Because of Winn Dixie." The dog is a Picardy Shepard, so Wendall may be a a rare, little street treasure.

He is up-to-date on shots and will be neutered.
