LOS ANGELES — Hundreds of genetic mutations accumulated over thousands of years have transformed the red jungle fowl of South Asia into the domesticated chickens that are a fixture on farms — and dining tables — worldwide, according to a scientific analysis of poultry DNA published this week in the journal Nature.

Swedish and American scientists identified roughly 7.5 million genetic variations between domesticated chickens and the jungle fowl, their primary wild ancestor. Then the scientists zeroed in on a few dozen differences that seemed particularly important based on their frequent prevalence in eight distinct populations of birds raised for meat or eggs.

One of the key genetic changes was in the DNA that carries the code for the thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor. (more…)

  • Adopt a Pet

Callie was one of the kittens of a stray my mother-in-law adopted several years ago.

My in-laws are both in the nursing home now, and we have sold their home. We are unable to keep Callie because of the number of pets we already own. Callie is a sweet, even-tempered, tabby cat. She is spayed and is about 8 years old.

We want to find an inside home for her.

She is comfortable around other dogs and/or cats.

She is living in our mudroom. Because our house is so close to the street, we do not let our pets outside. We would love for Callie to find a good adoptive family who would love and protect her.
